Memmingen, 2nd April 2019 – Aircraft Cabin Modification GmbH (ACM) launches another world first. The cabin interior specialist has developed a seat cover equipped with sensors that provides passengers with feedback on their current seating position and, if necessary, tips on how they can sit more healthily in the aircraft. The major benefit: Passengers arrive at their destination feeling more relaxed.

As humans, we are sitting more than ever. Statistics show that over 60 percent of working time is spent sitting – and mostly in an unhealthy sitting posture. The unpleasant consequence is more and more neck and back problems. ACM Aircraft Cabin Modification GmbH from Memmingen has tackled this problem, since time spent in an aircraft is, too, is usually not particularly good for the health, especially in economy class. Trying to find the right seating position after a certain amount of flight time is almost a matter of course. The reduced spacing between seats and new cost-saving seating are just as unhelpful.

Sitting is the new smoking

ACM has therefore developed a sensitive seat cover under the product name “Smeated”. Smeated stands for “Smart Seated”. Using interwoven sensors, the sensor textile analyses the current seating position of the passenger. The passenger can receive immediate visual feedback via an app or the in-flight entertainment system on how to sit more ergonomically and healthily. “We want this innovation to help passengers arrive at their destination feeling healthier and more rested”, explains ACM Managing Director Roger Hohl. “It has been proven that unhealthy sitting in an aircraft can cause serious health problems. Seat covers for economy class

The new system developed by ACM is currently available for economy class. The existing seats in the aircraft can also be easily and cost-effectively retrofitted because the sensors are not located in the seat but rather in the seat cover. “This investment will certainly pay off for the airlines, since passengers can enjoy their flight feeling more refreshed and with less neck, shoulder and back tension”, says Roger Hohl. This has a direct effect on customer satisfaction.

A few months ago, ACM Aircraft Cabin Modification GmbH announced its intentions to purchase a plot of land with an area of almost 15,000 square metres on the Memmingen airport grounds, with a view to using this site for the construction of a new building. As a specialist in complete cabin interiors, ACM wanted to take this step, in order to make its workflows more efficient, as this would mean that aircraft could be driven straight into the hall for conversions.

New development plans revised
“The already very positive order situation has continued to improve so much over the last few months that we are unable to wait until completion of the new building before expanding our business”, explains ACM Managing Director Roger Hohl. “Luckily, space has become available at our former site, and we are able to rent this space on a short-term basis”. The additional 3000 square metres mean that the current space requirements can be met for the time being. The new area will be divided up evenly into a production area, a high-bay warehouse and a goods delivery area. ACM’s current business expansion marks only a minor change from the new development plans at Memmingen airport, with only the building planning being modified as a result of the strong growth.

Not only does ACM Aircraft Cabin Modification GmbH urgently require additional space, additional personnel are also needed. The company, which currently employees 120 employees at the Memmingen site, is looking to hire upholsterers, interior designers, tailors, PMO professionals, developers, designers, engineers, trainees and others within the production and office-based business areas. Since the permitted working hours of the flight personnel are exceeded on long-haul flights with extremely long flight times, the crew rest compartments offer the ideal resting place for the on-board staff. This makes it easy to comply with the legal regulations relating to service and recovery times, which naturally has a positive impact on aviation safety and the efficiency of airlines.

Two specialists – one objective
Two companies who are absolute specialists in their fields have now joined forces in the form of ACM Aircraft Cabin Modification GmbH from Memmingen and EFW from Dresden. While EFW converts Airbus passenger aircraft into cargo aircraft, ACM is responsible for the entire cabin interior. “The two companies have therefore set themselves the objective of developing not only the largest and most comfortable flight crew rest compartment, but also one that is multi-purpose in its deployment,” explains ACM Managing Director Roger Hohl. Comfortable mattresses, sound-absorbing and light-impermeable curtains and an appealing design concept ensure optimum relaxation and privacy for crew members.

One-year development time
The new development is installed directly behind the cockpit and can accommodate two people. The upper bed can also be easily converted into storage space with two nets – a world first. A special protective cover is used to protect the mattresses against dirt, wear and moisture. “The development of the new flight crew rest compartment took a total of twelve months due to its complexity. We are very satisfied with the outcome. The new product is not only modular, but also easy to install and remove,” says Roger Hohl, who also praises the outstanding cooperation with EFW.

ACM Aircraft Cabin Modification GmbH is entering into a production and supply partnership with Ethiopian Airlines for the manufacture of seat covers, seat belts, carpets and other cabin equipment. “We are pleased to be entering into a strong partnership with the Ethiopian Airlines Group and expanding with cabin equipment made in Ethiopia. In doing this, we are also supporting the country’s development programme. I am extremely proud to be cooperating at a high quality level with Africa’s largest airline. I am certain that this represents a major step forwards,” said delighted ACM Managing Partner Arash Noshari.

One hundred new jobs
The new production facility in Ethiopia will naturally meet the strict requirements of the EASA European aviation authorities. Over 100 new jobs will be created in the process. “We are therefore not only creating over 100 new jobs in Ethiopia, but also transferring expertise in order to certify the local employees or rather, the new production facility, in accordance with European standards. As a consequence, this is the first time that ACM is also acting as a training organisation,” explains Roger Hohl, Managing Director of ACM.

Initially, the cabin equipment will be manufactured with imported raw materials. The objective, however, is to certify leather and materials made in Ethiopia for the demanding production process in the near future and, subsequently, continue to build up and develop the country’s textile and leather industry. “In accordance with our government’s industrialisation policy, we are working together with aircraft manufacturers and suppliers to the aerospace industry in order to be able to develop a wide range of products for the aerospace industry. The partnership with ACM Aerospace is a huge milestone for us in this respect,” explains Tewolde GebreMariam, CEO of the Ethiopian Airlines Group.

Aircraft Cabin Modification GmbH, currently based in Memmingen with 120 members of staff, has signed a declaration of intent with Allgäu Airport GmbH & Co. KG. The plan is to buy almost 15,000 square metres of land within the airfield. “As complete cabin interior specialists for aircraft and helicopters, this move clearly shows our commitment to the continued development of our core competencies in the market,” explains ACM Managing Director Roger Hohl enthusiastically. “The exact nature and type of buildings we will have on the site are currently under intense discussion. But one thing is clear: ACM’s presence in Memmingen will be relocated entirely to the airport. We will not be operating multiple sites.”

Our customers are the world’s largest airlines and private jet operators
With the ACM site and the airport connected, for the first time it will be possible to roll aircraft and helicopters directly into our hangar for renovation works. This will make all work processes even more efficient. “We are currently evaluating our options with regard to the size of this undertaking. We have quite a lot of different options to consider. We are looking at different hangar sizes for accommodating aircraft ranging from private jets to commercial airliners like the Boeing 737 or Airbus A320 series,” says Roger Hohl. Planning for such a large scope is very much necessary. And thanks to the many years of experience of our staff, we have the world’s biggest and most well-known airlines and highly exclusive operators or private and VIP jets among our customers.

The current selection of seat belts for aircrafts is extremely limited. The reason for this is simple: At the moment, there is only one provider on the entire market. ACM Aircraft Cabin Modification GmbH, which specialises in the entire cabin interior, is now changing this situation and launching its “Smart Belt” right on time for the Aircraft Interiors EXPO in Hamburg (10 to 12 April 2018). This global innovation is certainly a revolutionary innovation in this market segment.

Speeding up checks
The time crew members spend walking up and down the aisles before take-off and landing and in the case of turbulence to check whether passengers have fastened their seat belts will be revolutionised with the “Smart Belt”. Thanks to special belt sensors, this information will soon be presented to the crew via an app — at any time and interference-free. For example, if the passenger on seat 12C has not yet fastened his seat belt, crew members can directly request him to comply with safety regulations. Particularly in the case of suddenly occurring turbulence, this option increases safety not only for passengers, but also for crew members. Despite all the technology integrated into the Smart Belt, it does not weight more than standard seat belts used today.

No more compensation claims
Hence, the “Smart Belt”, a proprietary and patented product by ACM, ensures that the seat belt checks can be performed more rapidly and safely. But the new belt system has another advantage. If a passenger is injured during turbulence, it is a straightforward affair to prove whether his seat belt was fastened or not. The skills shortage is also omnipresent throughout the aviation industry as well as within associated supplier companies, such as ACM in Memmingen. Positions for aerospace engineers, for instance, continue to be difficult to fill. It is particularly difficult to find such profiles outside of large aviation centres.

ACM is therefore taking a new approach with Allgäu GmbH and participating in the first ever Allgäu Job Challenge, whereby job hopper Annabelle is trying out the profession of aerospace engineer at ACM’s facility. The job hopper was accompanied by radio and television crews at the work site.

Job hopper Annabelle
Annabelle is working for ACM for a few days and is familiarising herself with the products right in the very halls where they are created. She is going through a trainee programme at a variety of workstations, leaning how important and exact the high-quality processing of materials in aviation is. Not only does the low weight of the components play a part in aviation, fire resistance and stress limits of 9 or 16 G are basic components for the certification of the manufactured parts.

Production hall tour
It is impressed on Annabelle that components are manufactured for aeroplane cabins as well as helicopter cabins. Wall coverings, carpets, curtains and seat covers are only a few of the items in the product catalogue. What really stands out, however, is that ACM is the only non-manufacturer of seatbelts in Europe that can refurbish them. This is referred to as ‘seatbelt rewebbing’ in industry speak. “For airlines, it is much less expensive to have us refurbish seatbelts and flight crew restraint belt systems rather than buy new ones!” adds ACM Managing Director Roger Hohl.

Office work with the CAD programme
Part of an aerospace engineer’s job includes office work on a computer. Annabelle’s challenge is to create a carpet for an Airbus in the CAD programme. It is a difficult challenge, but one she is able to master with the help of an experienced ACM employee.

The site in Memmingen
“It is not a disadvantage that the production site for an international aviation supplier is in Memmingen!” states Roger Hohl, Managing Director of ACM, adding: “We are, however, constantly confronted with this question, and it’s true that the search takes longer here in the country than it would in a big city.” But the advantages for both the employees and the employer are clear. On the one hand, there is good transport infrastructure here with the nearby motorway interchange and the airport. Employees also enjoy the work-life balance and the supposedly lower cost of living compared to a big city. “We are very proud to be able to say Made in Allgäu / Germany, Engineered for the Sky!” concludes the Managing Director Roger Hohl.

Dornier Seawings is presenting the latest generation of amphibious aircraft – the Seastar CD2 – which sets new standards in the areas of speed, range, safety, cabin size and low maintenance costs. Some well-known figures have also placed pre-orders for the new two-engine aircraft that can be used anywhere thanks to its ability to land on both land and water.

The highest quality cockpit and cabin
“Being able to develop and build the cockpit as well as the cabin for an aircraft prototype like the new Seastar is something very special for ACM”, says ACM managing director Roger Hohl enthusiastically. “For the first time in the history of our company, we are responsible for more than providing a comfortable and exclusive cabin interior, we are also providing the cockpit.” It will be fitted out with the latest ‘state of the art’ future-proof fittings.

On-site mobile workshop
The Seastar is currently in the prototype stage. The engineers from ACM and Dornier are therefore working together to develop a mock-up for the roll-out. This mock-up is like a 1:1 scale model of the cockpit and the cabin. ACM is carrying out this work with their mobile workshop unit at Dornier’s site at the special Oberpfaffenhofen airport. “The work we are putting into everything from development, design, and choice of materials, through to effective construction, is an exciting challenge as we are presented with questions such as where is the best place to attach a ship’s anchor to the aircraft”, explains Roger Hohl. The multi-national team is pursuing the goal of ensuring that the new version of the Seastar will make Dornier the leading provider in the aero-marine sector. The two-engine aircraft offers space for up to twelve people and has a maximum speed of 300 km/h with a range of 1,600 km.
